Open Letter to
Congress

We write to you as citizens, workers, parents, and educators. Artificial intelligence is no longer speculative. It is accelerating and being deployed across every sector of American life with virtually no federal oversight.

The CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, and other frontier labs have publicly stated that advanced AI poses existential and societal risks. Nobel laureates and the scientists who invented modern AI have left their positions to speak freely about the dangers. The most powerful technology in human history should not be developed and deployed without guardrails.

And yet Congress has not passed a single comprehensive safeguard. Not one enforceable safety standard. Not one requirement for independent testing before deployment. Not one federal agency with the authority to monitor, inspect, and regulate AI at scale. While the EU, the UK, and Canada move forward with binding AI legislation, the United States, home to the most powerful AI companies on Earth, remains paralyzed by inaction.

Every major AI company has publicly asked to be regulated. The question is no longer whether to act, it is whether our elected representatives have the will to do so before the next wave of harm makes the choice for us.

We are not opposed to AI. We are opposed to AI without accountability, a future where unaccountable corporations shape hundreds of millions of lives without democratic consent, and where we wait for the next catastrophe to justify action that should have been taken years ago.

The companies have asked for guardrails. The scientists have warned of the risks. The public is paying attention. We vote. We organize. We will not forget which representatives stood up for accountability and which stood aside.
